Start with Why

What might have been my favorite word growing up has strangely become the center of my adult universe as well.  All because intelligent and inspirational experts convinced me to. 

In case you haven’t joined the TED community yet, it’s a must-do and here’s a must-watch:  How Great Leaders Inspire Action by Simon Sinek.

Ever more increasingly it seems the millennial generation wants to make a personal impact on the world and influence global movements.  How exactly does anyone expect to have influence?  Simon Sinek proves that all remarkable leaders know their why.

When you know your why, you’ve become mentally aware of the roots beneath the tree.  It mandates that your purpose is clear and honest.  All your actions, beliefs, behaviors, and attitudes stem from the roots of your why — which leads to your results and lifestyle.  By switching to the inner circle of “why” you’ve aligned with the small percent of influential greats that have changed businesses, movements, and lives.

Consumers command the same of businesses.  They want transparency, ethical business standards, sustainable practices, and a focus on the surrounding communities.  A business logo isn’t enough now.  Consumers want value behind the brand.  A story, a clear description of why they should pay attention to you and what worth your brand promises, is indispensable.

As a person or a business, if you haven’t first filled your own well, you’ll have nothing to draw from.  Sure, a big flashy sign might attract a couple moths, but authentic valuable people will stay far away.  If a business doesn’t engage and serve its followers it has no relationship with them — no loyalty and no positive word of mouth.  Designing your life around your why creates transparency and beauty in every other area.  A business can venture out to any limb it desires if it aligns with the vision and purpose of Why.

What’s your Why?  What conversation do you want to be a part of?  If you want influence, an impact, what are you doing to conceive the results in your life?  Begin with the end in mind.  Imagine being on your death bed however many years from now, or maybe even the scenario of a terminal illness and only having a given time left.  If you’re not compelled by your business or personal vision under those circumstances then chances are no one else is going to be exhilarated either.  Success can be measured by the amount of fiery passionate desire behind your vision, your purpose, your why.

Listen to politicians now, with their comprehensive 12-point plans. They’re not inspiring anybody. Because there are leaders and there are those who lead. Leaders hold a position of power or authority, but those who lead inspire us. Whether they’re individuals or organizations, we follow those who lead, not because we have to, but because we want to. We follow those who lead, not for them, but for ourselves. And it’s those who start with “why” that have the ability to inspire those around them or find others who inspire them.”
